Partial Highlights for First-Timers: What to Expect & How to Prepare

Hermosa, Chicago | highlights guidance for first-timers
My studio is known for being spotless, well-lit, and genuinely welcoming, and if you’re nervous about getting partial highlights for the first time, that calm vibe matters. It’s normal to feel unsure about foils, toner, timing, and what you’ll look like when it’s done. The good news is partial highlights are one of the most straightforward ways to brighten your hair without feeling like you’re committing to a full overhaul.
Here’s the simple version: partial highlights lighten select sections, usually the crown and face-framing pieces, for a subtle lift. Expect a short consultation, a smaller number of foils than a full highlight, and a finishing toner to make the color look clean and intentional. Plan for about 45 to 120 minutes depending on your length and thickness, and come in with clean, dry hair and a couple of reference photos.
Prep for partial highlights in Chicago: clean, dry hair and photos that actually help
If you’ve ever searched “hair salon near me” or “hairdressing salon” and still felt unsure what to do before color, you’re not alone. I keep prep simple so you don’t overthink it.
What I recommend the day of your appointment
- Arrive with clean, dry, detangled hair. Damp hair and heavy knots slow everything down.
- Skip heavy styling products. Oils, waxes, and dry shampoo buildup can make it harder to get even lift.
- Bring 2 to 3 photos. One for the brightness you like, one for placement, and one for the overall vibe.
- Tell me your hair history. Box color, recent toners, perms, or lightening matter, even if it was months ago.
And one more thing that makes a big difference: tell me what you don’t want. If you hate warm tones, don’t want chunky pieces, or you’re trying to avoid obvious regrowth lines, I want to hear it upfront. That’s how I keep partial highlights looking soft and wearable, especially for busy schedules around Cicero Avenue and the CTA Blue Line.
Your first partial highlights appointment, step by step (so there are no surprises)
People come to Epic Studio because we listen. I hear it all the time: the team takes their time, asks the right questions, and makes sure the details match what you asked for. That’s the energy I keep in the chair for color too. If you’ve been burned by rushed color in the past, this will feel different.
1) Consultation first, then a clear plan
When you arrive, we’ll talk through your starting point, your goal, and how subtle or bright you want your highlights. Partial highlights usually focus on the crown and the face-framing area, so you get that brightness where you actually see it day to day.
2) Foils through select sections (not your whole head)
I’ll section your hair, then place a smaller number of foils than a full highlight. You’ll feel the foils being placed and folded. It shouldn’t hurt. If anything feels too tight near your hairline, tell me and I’ll adjust it.
3) Processing time, then rinse and tone
Processing time depends on your hair’s natural level, your previous color, and how light we’re going. After we rinse, I’ll usually apply a toner. Toner is the step that keeps your highlights looking expensive, not brassy or flat.
4) Finish work: blow-dry, style, and optional trim
Once your color is balanced, we’ll dry and style so you can really see the dimension. If you’ve been thinking about a cleanup, this is also a good time to pair highlights with a trim so the ends look fresh with the new brightness.
“So glad I found this place. Each time I come, I get exactly what I want, even if I don't have a clear idea when I arrive. Very friendly, always accommodating.”

After your highlights: how to keep the tone pretty and the hair feeling healthy
Right after partial highlights, your scalp might feel a little tender just from being handled and sectioned. That’s normal. What I care about most is how your hair looks and feels over the next few weeks, especially with Chicago weather swings.
Shampoo and water temperature
I generally recommend a color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and lukewarm water. Hot water can fade toner faster.
Heat tools and protection
If you use a flat iron or curling iron, keep the temp reasonable and use heat protectant. You’ll keep the shine and the tone longer.
Masking and moisture
If your hair feels dry, ask me about a take-home mask. That extra moisture matters heading into winter.
Maintenance is the part people rarely explain well. Partial highlights tend to be lower-maintenance than full highlights, but toner can still shift over time. I’ll tell you what I’d do next, usually a refresh or a toner appointment depending on how fast your hair grows and how bright we went. October in Chicago is often cooler and less humid, and that weather can help your tone last a bit longer compared to sticky summer weeks.
“This is my second time going here. Of the many places I’ve gone to, this one is by far both a fine mix of quality work and keeping the feeling chill and homely.”

My Hermosa advice for low-maintenance highlights (and busy schedules)
If you’re coming to me from Cicero, Berwyn, Logan Square, or even out by Elmwood Park or River Grove, the goal is simple. I want you to leave with dimension that grows out nicely. That’s the whole point of partial highlights for a first timer.
Here’s a detail I don’t keep secret: if you want the most natural grow-out, ask me for softer face-framing placement instead of going too heavy at the hairline. You still get brightness around your face, but you won’t feel like you need an emergency touch-up the second your roots show.
And yes, I’m in a barbershop setting, but I’m also a place families come for color. People bring their partners and kids, and I hear a lot of loyalty in the way they talk about coming back year after year. If you’ve been bouncing between “salon near me” searches and still haven’t found your spot, I take that seriously.
Want to keep reading? I wrote two quick guides that pair well with this: our Hair Color services in Hermosa and a deeper Hair Color guide for choosing the right option. If you’re also comparing other services like braids or searching “hair braiding near me, ” those guides help you pick what fits your schedule and your hair goals.
When you’re ready, bring those photos and come in with your hair clean and dry. I’ll take it from there and keep it comfortable, clear, and realistic, just like it should be.
Quick note if you found me by searching “barbershop near me” or “haircut near me”
A lot of people meet us for a haircut near me search, then realize we’re also a solid option for color. If you want a clean cut after your highlights, or you’re planning a bigger change later, I’m happy to map out a plan that doesn’t fry your hair or blow up your maintenance schedule.
